TRUTH: you can’t call yourself Ugly and then behave that way--too obvious.
So instead, we try to do some good in the world:  We only roast coffee that’s traded and grown in a way that benefits the growers and the environment.  You may hear the phrase “roasted with integrity” around here, or you may not. It’s not something we really say, as much as it's something that we just do.

Maybe you’re thinking there’s already plenty of other “pretty” coffee companies who talk that kind of blah-blah-blah, and you're absolutely right.

Here’s the difference with us:  We're walking the blah-blah-blah.

We believe in doing our part to help the coffee farmer. We try, in small part, by using anywhere from 10% to 100% Fair Trade Coffee in each of our blends; supporting faith based organizations that have outreach programs in coffee growing countries; and visiting coffee plantations to trade directly so they get the best value for their beans.

It’s not always easy, but we select the purest beans in a way that’s fair to farmers who grow them. A fair trade price means farmers can feed and clothe their families.  It means they receive adequate healthcare. It means they can give their kids educational opportunities. The list goes on.

We also do our best to lower our impact on the environment. In our company we beleive in recycling and reusing everything that we can. Our chaff ( he leaf that comes out of a coffee bean in the roasting process) is used as compost and fertilizer material for local urban gardens and botanical gardens. in fact, we have our own "Ugly Garden" which is 100% organically grown.

Furthermore; our burlap sacks are great for keeping in moisture and weed control. We even have contracted with immigrants from Burundai to make purses from the sacks to sell on line and in our stores, with much of the proceeds going back to the people.

Most recently, we have been at the forefront of the movement to make single-cup coffee brewing methods more eco-friendly.  Our coffee capsules for Keurig are among the first to be completely recyclable while remaining compatible with all Keurig machines.

As soon as we order that fine, ethically sourced, fair trade coffee and get as much support to the farmers that grow it as possible, we have it shipped up the Mississippi River to Memphis. We devote as much time and attention to roasting it as most would their firstborn child.  We roast, analyze, we sample, we scrutinize every last bean--all for you.  From the plantation to the roaster to the person who brews it, faster is fresher and fresher is better.

Since we started in a coffee house (1998, campus hangout, lots of spiritually uplifting coffee-fueled philosophizing), we know about customer service. When you think customer service, we want to be the first thought in your mind. We love our customers, our potential customers, our employees, and our community.

...and we're a great place to work, too--if you're the ugly type!
